Pink or blue baby booties?

Today I had my big ultrasound appointment where Mister T and I learned the genders of the twins. We were so anxious to find out! It was a two-hour appointment and I wondered if they would wait until the end to tell us.

In the first two minutes we learned that Baby AA is a boy! He is so active rolling around and kicking. He will be the first to be born based on his position.

After an hour of taking his measurements, checking his organs, counting his fingers, listening to his heart and taking cute pictures for us to take home, we moved over to Baby BB. We had to wait for Baby BB to open the legs for us to find out the gender. Meanwhile Baby AA kept coming into the picture by throwing his arms and kicking his legs into his sibling as he kept rolling around.

Then Baby BB rolled over and showed us she is a girl! We have a really cute picture of her resting her head on her brother's head (with just a millimeter of a membrane between them).

Mister T and I are so happy to be expecting a baby boy and a baby girl! And we are most happy that everything looked good on the ultrasound.

The doctor came in at the end of the appointment to talk about the ultrasound results. He told us that our main focus now should be keeping the twins inside as long as possible. The big risk is premature labor. Mister T then asked if there is anything we can do. The doctor quickly replied that yes, there is something that can be done. This is the point where I wish I had a tape recorder or pen and paper on hand.

He advised that I should lay down for an hour each morning and for three to four hours in the late afternoon. I had to hold back from bursting out with laughter! A doctor had just told my husband that I must rest between 4 and 7 every day!

On the way home Mister T wanted to get an afternoon coffee. I asked him if he wanted to go to Starbucks or Peets. He chose Peets which was two blocks farther so I made sure to tell him that the extra walking may necessitate an extra half hour of resting this evening!

  4. Oh, Mama H!
That is some heart-warming news you've brought us today. I wonder if Baby AA will continue to be a rambunctious fella once he's out of the womb! Big sis L, as well as twin sis BB, will have to keep him in line!

Okay knitters, now that you know the sexes you can start doing your thing for Mama H (and I'll start scoping stores...)

  5. The best of both worlds... what great news! Even more important that they're both healthy. When you wrote that the doctor had funny news, I thought you were going to say that he told Mister T no sex. But napping... that sounds like heaven... and better than sex these days! Hopefully you'll be able to heed the doc's advice.
P.S. I have to remind you right now that I neither knit nor sew (nor do I woodwork, paint or throw pottery), so unless you want me to ship you some delicious homemade meals from NYC, I hope you're not expecting anything homemade from this mama!

  6. How funny Mama G- I love the stroller!!! What are you going to do for a stroller Mama H- one of those crazy strollers w/a jumpseat? I just saw one the other day.

I'm not buying a double till I have the baby- and hoping to wait a few months. I don't want to get one I'll change my mind on- we have no room for that!

  7. Such wonderful news Mama H! As I said in my email this morning, so pleased for you. What a perfect family.

Mama G the stroller is very funny. I've got a double running stroller. I can't wait to use it. Apart from that I'm going to Baby Bjorn from the very beginning then use the Ergo later. I think I'll be using one most days around the house too. But it's different for twins - can't BBjorn them both!

How will you manage Mama H? You were such a devoted Ergo user with Miss L. And nursing? I've had dreams when I first discovered I was pregnant that I was co-sleeping with twins and tryin to breast feed both babies. They kept waking up at the same time. You really are so well suited to twins.

With 3 sets of non identical twins in my family, I'm worried my next pregnancy (if we do, will be twins). Just read this article which I thought was really funny: http://multiples.about.com/od/funfacts/tp/howtohavetwins.htm - I'll never drink milk or eat yams again! As for falling pregnant while breastfeeding, will have to wean first next time!

  8. Mazel tov, Mama H! Did the doctor also have a recommendation on whether to drink Peet's or Starbucks? On second thought, maybe caffeine doesn't go well with your new rest regimen.

  9. Thank you everyone for your well wishes!

We haven't figured out the stroller yet. The double strollers can't fit the platforms that allow a toddler to stand in the back and ride along. And I can't bring myself to buy the one with the jumper seat. I don't think I could hold my head high and walk down the street with one of those, especially after my beloved Stokke. I guess Norwegians don't have multiples because Stokke does not have a double stroller solution. I was actually thinking of the Phil & Ted Vibe that Mama LS has. I could sling/ergo one, put the other in the bassinet in the back and let Lily ride in the front. Then eventually Lily will walk with me while I push the twins (once her walking pace speeds up a bit!).

We also have to buy a new car because our car will not fit three car seats in the back. Don't worry, there is no minivan/caravan in our future. Mama A has been helping me think of good options.

As for breastfeeding, I went to a breastfeeding fair last week at my hospital and the lactation consultants were extremely nice and helpful. And I won a raffle prize - a breast pumping bustier! If you have twins the lactation consultants come right to your room about an hour after birth to help you start breastfeeding. They recommend always feeding them at the same time, so if one is asleep then you wake him or her up. This helps eventually get them on the same feeding schedule and helps keep you somewhat sane in those early days of feeding every one to two hours. They have a breastfeeding pillow like My Breast Friend that is built for two. They recommend the football hold to start with and then they say once you get the hang of it you can actually lay them in opposite directions (I can't quite picture this, but I'll go with it for now!). I am going to try and breastfeed exclusively (don't tell Mister T who just wants to make things easy by doing a combination of pumping and formula). I have read many comments on the multiples board here and they discourage a lot of pumping at the beginning because the babies are the best to get your supply up.

I started putting together my lists to plan for furniture, clothes and supplies. Lots of planning ahead!

  10. THIS IS FABULOUS NEWS!!!!!!!!!!
Not the boy girl thing, the rest recommendation while Master T was present. I wish I had a photo of the looks on both of your faces. Please update us on the progress of your naps. In all seriousness though I read this on my IPhone at 5 am when I glanced at it to check the time and was afraid to make a comment and engage too much in hopes I may fall back to sleep but all I could do was think about all of the great benefits of them being boy/girl combo. Bravo Mama H, well done.
Please send pics of the bump.

OH! And in regards to the stroller the bassinet will fit both actually for the first 6 - 8 weeks I bet. The only complaint I have is that the sun goes right down in to that back seat or bassinet so get a sun shade or sunscreen blanket to hang over the back.
